VALE TONY BUTLER LIFE MEMBER
It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that we inform you of the passing of Life Member, Tony Butler earlier today.
Tony joined our Association in 1979, he was graded in 1993 and awarded Life Membership in 2002. He achieved so much on the field including his appointment to the A Grade division 1 grand final in 1985 and being awarded the Bob Kandelas Referees’ Referee Award in 1986. Tony held many positions including Advisory Panel, Appointments Board, Coaching Panel and Association Trainer, the latter being a role he was dedicated to improving the fitness of the active referees.
Outside of Penrith Tony was held with great regard among the New South Wales Rugby League Referees Association, Tony was graded #759 in 1987. He achieved a number of milestones in his graded career, one being the In-goal judge for the 1992 Grand Final.
“Tony was responsible for a number of Penrith members getting through the junior reps and into grade. I personally owe him a great deal for how he developed me in my early years. Such sad news, rest in peace Butts and thank you.” – Russell Turner, fellow Penrith Referees Life Member.
At this very distressful time, our thoughts and prayers are with Tony’s wife Debbie and their extended family. Along with several of our Life Members who were good friends and supporters.
A private funeral service will be held for Tony.
