NRL Debut for Lawrence McDonell
Round 4 of the National Rugby League has brought big news for one member of the Penrith District Rugby League Referee's Association. This Saturday Lawrence McDonell will make his debut as a match official at the top level. Lawrence has been appointed as a touch judge for the match between the St George-Illawarra Dragons and the Manly Sea Eagles at WIN Stadium in Wollongong. His NRL number will be 135.
This is a huge milestone in an already impressive career that started in the Penrith District back in 1998. Lawrence is a graduate of the Penrith Referee's Development Squad Program and during his time in the District was a regular in the A Grade Division One Competition, including numerous finals series fixtures. Lawrence controlled the 2010 SG Ball Grand Final and was graded to the New South Wales Rugby League Referee's Association (NSWRLRA) as member number 947.
He went on to officiate in a large number of Ron Massey Cup and NSW Cup matches and in more recent times has appeared regularly in the Holden Cup Competition. In 2014 he was appointed as a touch judge for the Holden Cup Grand Final.
This week's appointment marks the beginning of a new era in Lawrence's career and our Association wishes him all the best for the future.
